Coroner Opens Inquest Into Army Officer’s Training Death, Sets 2027 Hearing Date

  • Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney, 25, a fire support commander with 129 (Dragon) Battery of 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, died on January 25 during a live firing exercise at the Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland.
  • Senior coroner Andrew Hetherington said the gunshot wound is believed to have entered through his back and exited through his left shoulder.
  • Military medics performed CPR and ambulance crews attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Northumbria Police, the Health and Safety Executive and the Defence Safety Authority are investigating, with the Defence Safety Authority conducting a service inquiry.
  • At Northumberland Coroner’s Court, proceedings were formally opened and provisionally listed for May 19, 2027, with his parents attending via videolink.
