Cornyn Holds 1-Point Edge in Texas GOP Runoff as Q1 Haul Dwarfs Paxton's

Undecided Republicans remain the swing in a May 26 race vulnerable to a Trump endorsement.

Overview

  • A co/efficient poll of 1,143 likely GOP voters, taken April 11–14 ahead of the May 26 runoff, shows Cornyn at 44% and Paxton at 43% with 13% undecided and a 3.07 point margin of error.
  • Cornyn raised about $9 million in the first quarter and reports $8.2 million cash on hand, while Paxton raised about $2.2 million and has $2.6 million on hand.
  • Democratic nominee James Talarico raised $27 million in the first quarter, triple Cornyn’s haul, which lets him stockpile funds while Republicans fight a runoff.
  • Subgroup results show Cornyn leading Hispanic voters by 10 points and doing better in Austin, Dallas–Fort Worth, and urban and suburban areas, while Paxton leads with Trump supporters, Christians, many men, and in Houston and rural regions.
  • Trump has not endorsed and wrote on Truth Social that he will choose soon and wants the non-endorsed candidate to drop out, a threat that could quickly shift undecided voters.
