COPA Releases Video Showing Officer Firing Through Squad-Car Windshield in Jan. Chicago Shooting

The footage provides direct evidence of an exchange of gunfire that will guide civilian and police reviews of the use of force.

Overview

  • On Jan. 23, officers responding to a reported domestic disturbance in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue encountered Pierre Davis after a 22-year-old woman was found shot inside an apartment.
  • Body-camera video released May 27 by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability shows officers and the suspect exchanging gunfire and includes footage of at least one officer firing through the squad-car windshield.
  • Police recovered a firearm at the scene and say Davis was struck multiple times and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition while the female victim was treated and listed in good condition.
  • Court records show Davis was indicted by a grand jury on 21 felony counts including attempted murder and that he has prior felony convictions and a recent prison release.
  • The two officers were taken to hospitals for observation, placed on administrative duty under CPD policy, and COPA and police investigators continue reviews with the released materials available to the public.
