Coordinated Dawn Attacks Hit Five Towns Across Mali

The multi-site assault signals a renewed, wider offensive that tests Malian and Russian forces and could deepen insecurity in the north and centre of the country.

Overview

  • Early on Saturday, July 4, Mali’s army reported near-simultaneous attacks on Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Sevare and Kenieroba that began at about 05:00 GMT and involved gunfire and explosions.
  • The Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front told Reuters it struck Anefis, a town where Malian troops and Russian paramilitary units were deployed after April’s major rebel offensives, and said fighting was ongoing.
  • Local officials reported rockets and sustained gunfire at a military camp in Gao and witnesses in Sevare described explosions and aircraft overhead as the assaults unfolded.
  • AFP cited residents, security sources and a prisoner saying the main prison complex in Kenieroba, south of Bamako, was under attack, highlighting that detention facilities and military sites were targeted.
  • The strikes follow large April attacks that hit Bamako and captured northern bases, and they raise the risk of further displacement, strain on security forces and wider regional instability if government control continues to weaken.
