Hail and Heavy Rain Cool Delhi-NCR as Pre-Monsoon Storms Sweep India

The IMD expects storms to continue into early May, with isolated heatwaves still likely in Vidarbha and west Rajasthan.

Overview

  • Delhi-NCR, which saw a fresh burst of rain and hail on Thursday, recorded 8–15°C drops at several stations as IMD issued orange and yellow alerts.
  • Bengaluru’s downpours late Wednesday led to waterlogging and traffic snarls across key neighborhoods and local reports counted ten rain-related deaths.
  • The IMD forecasts fairly widespread storms through early May across the Northeast, East and parts of South India and has warned fishermen of rough seas in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Forecasters say isolated heatwaves will persist in Vidarbha and west Rajasthan on May 1–3 even as some northwest cities get short rain breaks.
  • Gusts topping 40–60 km/h and pockets of hail are expected to cause tree falls, brief power cuts and slick roads, and Delhi’s air stayed in the poor band at an AQI of 260 despite showers.
