Contraflow Begins on Middlesbrough’s A172/A174 Flyover as Months-Long Repairs Start

Months of lane reductions will enable safety repairs to keep the flyover open.

Overview

  • Works began Monday, March 2, at the A172 Marton Road/A174 interchange and are scheduled to run until autumn 2026.
  • A continuous contraflow now limits the bridge to a single lane in each direction, with temporary traffic lights used during certain phases.
  • Turn restrictions are in place: left-turn only from the A174 slip to Stokesley Road and no right turns from the bridge onto the A174.
  • Occasional overnight lane closures and intermittent full closures are expected, with advance warning signs to be posted on affected roads.
  • The programme includes concrete and waterproofing repairs, resurfacing, new kerbs and footways, and upgraded pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barriers, with the council and Esh Construction working to avoid long diversions.
