Contact at Barcelona Clínic Tests Negative for Hantavirus and Moves to Home Isolation

Regional health teams will continue active surveillance to complete the 42-day monitoring period.

Overview

  • Hospital Clínic de Barcelona reported that the person identified as a contact of a hantavirus case returned a third negative PCR and may leave hospital isolation for home quarantine.
  • The woman spent about four weeks in the hospital isolation unit and remained asymptomatic and in good general condition throughout her stay.
  • She must complete 14 more days at home to reach the 42-day period set by epidemiological protocols and will receive active clinical and epidemiological follow-up.
  • Salud Pública and the emergency medical service (SEM) will jointly monitor the case and the hospital says the response is coordinated with state health authorities.
  • Hantavirus has circulated in Spain since the 1990s with provinces such as Soria and Burgos noted as persistent areas of transmission, which helps explain the strict monitoring rules.
