Construction Begins on IMSS Specialty Hospital in Morelia With 26-Month Timeline

The build anchors a state–federal push to expand care in Michoacán.

Overview

  • IMSS, Mexico’s public health and social security system, has started work on a regional specialty hospital in Villas del Pedregal under a publicly tendered contract won by Prodemex with completion targeted in 26 months.
  • The hospital rises on 60,000 square meters of donated land, including 45,000 from the state government and 15,000 from the Morelia municipality, which IMSS leaders publicly praised as key to the project.
  • Officials outlined a large facility with operating rooms and advanced imaging and therapy equipment, while offering conflicting figures on capacity that range from about 260 to nearly 500 beds and from 54 to about 70 specialties.
  • Alongside the construction launch, authorities delivered 326 direct appointments to medical specialists, or 407 when counting temporary staff, to strengthen services across Michoacán.
  • In a separate move, the governor said a new IMSS hospital in Zitácuaro will start in June 2026 with a 1,500‑million‑peso budget and 72 beds to serve 18 municipalities and cut long trips for patients.
