Consensys Splits as MetaMask Becomes a Standalone Company

The split is meant to let MetaMask scale as a consumer finance platform.

Overview

  • Consensys announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, that its existing legal entity will rebrand as MetaMask and a newly formed company will take the Consensys name to house protocol and institutional operations.
  • Leadership roles were assigned: Joe Lubin will serve as chairman and CEO of the standalone MetaMask and as executive chairman of the new Consensys, Mike Kriak will be CEO of the new Consensys, and David Cunningham will be its president.
  • MetaMask will concentrate on consumer finance products such as Money Account, the mUSD stablecoin, a Mastercard-backed debit card and tokenized investments, and the company says the wallet has more than 100 million downloads and trillions in cumulative transaction volume.
  • The firms say users will not need to change apps, keys or move funds, but they have not disclosed how assets, intellectual property, employees, liabilities, ownership stakes or financing will be split between the two companies and offered no firm IPO or token plans.
  • The new Consensys will keep Linea, Besu and Teku and focus on enterprise Ethereum infrastructure, a structure that leaves open key questions about which networks will carry future activity and how that will affect demand for ETH and fee flows.
