CONICET Launches Interactive Livestream From Patagonia Dinosaur Dig

The project follows CONICET’s widely watched ocean campaign, using satellite links to let viewers interact with a late Cretaceous excavation in real time.

Overview

  • The public broadcasts run October 6–10 in two daily windows, roughly 11:00–12:30 and 17:00–18:30, on LACEV’s YouTube and Instagram channels.
  • The field campaign spans September 28–October 15 at a ~70‑million‑year‑old site about 30 km from General Roca that has yielded at least ten previously undescribed species.
  • Scientists aim to recover more of Bonapartenykus ultimus and additional material from a possibly new carnivorous dinosaur, with identifications to follow laboratory study.
  • The effort is led by Federico Agnolín with LACEV researchers including Matías Motta, Sebastián Rozadilla, Mauro Aranciaga, Nicolás Chimento and Julia D’Angelo, supported by National Geographic, the Félix de Azara Foundation and Río Negro’s culture office.
  • Early transmissions showed a well‑preserved fossil at the quarry, which researchers cautioned remains under evaluation pending precise identification.
