CONICET Announces Talud Continental V to Explore Two Unstudied Submarine Canyons

The April 2027 mission will map unknown deep‑sea life to inform conservation policy.

Overview

  • CONICET and the Schmidt Ocean Institute announced the new Talud Continental V campaign on June 8, 2026, with a planned departure in April 2027 and an option to move to February.
  • Scientists will target the Ameghino and Almirante Brown submarine canyons off Chubut and plan manned ROV and AUV dives to about 4,500–5,000 meters to document deep‑sea habitats.
  • The expedition will sail on the research vessel Falkor (too) and use the ROV SuBastian plus autonomous underwater vehicles capable of greater depths to collect HD imagery and samples.
  • A 19‑member Argentine team from GEMPA will lead biodiversity, eDNA, sediment and oceanographic studies while running live broadcasts, school outreach and open data releases.
  • The mission builds on Talud Continental IV’s discoveries of cold‑water coral reefs and more than 40 candidate new species and aims to provide baselines for conservation and national capacity building.
