Congress Uses NCRB 2024 Data to Press BJP on Women’s Safety, Seeks Parliament Review

The move seeks a Monsoon Session debate on NCRB findings with transparency on convictions.

Overview

  • Congress leaders, who cited the NCRB 2024 report on Friday, said crimes against women rose 42.6% since 2013 and totaled 42.85 lakh cases from 2014 to 2024.
  • Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge pointed to sharp increases for children and marginalized groups, noting a 204.6% rise in crimes against children and sizable jumps for Dalits and Adivasis since 2013.
  • Kharge also highlighted a 1,689% surge in cybercrime and 2024 suicide counts that included 10,546 farmers, 52,931 daily wage earners, and 14,488 students, framing them as signs of social distress.
  • All India Mahila Congress chief Alka Lamba demanded a Monsoon Session discussion on the data and asked for disclosure of how many victims saw convictions, with a focus on POCSO cases that cover offenses against children.
  • Lamba accused BJP-led states of protecting the accused in recent cases in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Bihar, while the BJP defended its record and pointed to tougher laws, welfare schemes, and policing upgrades.
