Congress Approves National Intercultural University for Datem del Marañón

The law aims to expand local higher education in Loreto to meet indigenous demands while key implementation steps and an opening timetable remain undefined

Overview

  • The Pleno del Congreso approved Project of Law No. 9723 on Friday, June 12, 2026, to create the Universidad Nacional Intercultural de Datem del Marañón with its headquarters in San Lorenzo.
  • The bill was authored by Congressman Juan Carlos Mori Celis and the plenary vote passed 89 in favor, none against and five abstentions, with the measure exonerated from a second vote.
  • Initial academic offerings in the proposal include bilingual intercultural education, nursing, forestry engineering, environmental engineering, agroindustrial engineering, veterinary medicine and zootecnia.
  • Legislators say the university will have an intercultural mission to strengthen local identity and preserve languages, including a proposed language center to teach about 25 indigenous tongues.
  • Local officials and indigenous groups backed the project but articles note this approval is a first legal step and that funding, accreditation, staffing and a schedule for admitting students have not yet been set.
