Overview
- Security personnel detained a man identified by community groups as Yves Sakila in connection with an alleged shoplifting incident on Henry Street last Friday and he later became unresponsive and died in hospital.
- A circulating video shows Sakila held on the ground for several minutes with one person appearing to kneel on his head or neck, footage that witnesses and campaign groups have described as deeply disturbing.
- Gardaí preserved the scene, notified the coroner and referred the case to Fiosrú, while the Office of the State Pathologist will conduct post-mortem work as investigations continue and early reporting said an initial post-mortem did not determine a cause of death.
- Senior politicians and civil liberties groups have called for a full, transparent inquiry, and more than 100 people have held vigils and left tributes at the spot where Sakila was detained.
- The case has intensified debate about the role and training of private security, policing and the safety of migrant and Black communities in Ireland, and could lead to stricter oversight of retail security operations.
