Concord Theatricals Secures Worldwide Rights to License Sorkin’s To Kill a Mockingbird

The move opens Sorkin’s version to nonprofessional stages worldwide through Samuel French.

Overview

  • Concord Theatricals, which announced the deal Tuesday, will license Aaron Sorkin’s To Kill a Mockingbird worldwide through its Samuel French imprint.
  • The agreement makes the script available to stock, school, college, and community productions, with Sorkin saying he is thrilled to see it take root in local theaters.
  • The play premiered on Broadway in 2018, set the record as the highest-grossing American play there, and played a 2020 Madison Square Garden performance for about 18,000 students.
  • After closing at the Shubert Theatre in January 2022 and later playing the Belasco and London’s Gielgud, the production has toured the U.S. and U.K. and is set to conclude in May.
  • Sorkin’s adaptation remains distinct from Christopher Sergel’s 1970 version, which Dramatic Publishing licenses, following a 2022 arbitration that upheld Sergel’s exclusive school and amateur rights.
