Conagua Says It Is Ready for the 2026 Rainy and Hurricane Season

Rising deployments tied to unusual rains highlight pressure to renew aging gear.

Overview

  • Conagua said Wednesday at its CRAE 1 “El Cristo” base in Tlalnepantla that it is prepared for the season that starts May 15 in the Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic.
  • PIAE, Conagua’s year‑round emergency unit considered part of national security, fields 706 trained brigadiers and 1,440 specialized units across 21 regional centers.
  • The fleet includes heavy pumps, rescue trucks, water‑purification plants, generators, tankers and boats, and Conagua says some gear is unique in Mexico and needs cranes to deploy.
  • Pre‑season work is underway with states on clearing drains and silt, known locally as desazolve, with active operations in Hidalgo, Sonora, Sinaloa and Morelos to lower flood risk.
  • Emergency callouts have climbed from 77 in 2023 to 136 in 2025, driven by out‑of‑season hail and drainage or water‑pipe failures, and 11 interventions so far in 2026 span Baja California, Guerrero, State of Mexico, Jalisco, Sonora and Hidalgo as older equipment from 2012–2015 is now under review for renewal.
