- UKAEA announced on Wednesday that Commonwealth Fusion Systems is the first international company to join the £220 million LIBRTI programme to test tritium-breeding blanket technologies.
- LIBRTI is building a first-of-a-kind test facility at the Culham Campus using a newly acquired high-flux neutron source to recreate reactor-like neutron conditions for blanket experiments.
- Under the agreement CFS and UKAEA will co-design experiments, develop testing protocols, and CFS will deliver the initial test articles for industry-led investigations at the facility.
- Demonstrating net tritium production is crucial because future deuterium–tritium fusion plants must breed enough tritium in their lithium blankets to fuel themselves without scarce external supplies.
- The public–private, cross-border partnership strengthens the UK’s fusion strategy and gives CFS hands-on validation for blanket designs that support its SPARC/ARC commercial timeline while full facility commissioning and experimental results remain pending.
