Overview
- The Commission of Presidential Pardons met on Wednesday, June 10 and declared inadmissible the sixth common pardon petition for former president Pedro Castillo while also rejecting and ordering the file of the derecho de gracia to be archived.
- The pardons office said the derecho de gracia was closed because Castillo’s legal team did not correct the formal deficiencies within the internal 20-business-day window required by the commission’s rules.
- The petition examined by the commission arrived at the Ministry of Justice on May 19 and was screened for admissibility before any recommendation could be sent to the Executive.
- Castillo remains imprisoned at Barbadillo under a prior conviction for the December 7, 2022 attempt to dissolve Congress and faces separate investigations and a preventive detention order that would prevent immediate release even if a common pardon were granted.
- The Justice Ministry and commission leaders stressed the decision followed technical, collegial procedures set by the Decreto Supremo N.° 004-2007-JUS and the commission’s internal rules rather than a single political directive.
