Colts Keep Daniel Jones in 7-on-7 During OTAs as Return Is Phased In

A deliberate, stepwise plan restricts Jones to non-contact pass periods to protect his recovering Achilles.

Overview

  • Daniel Jones was cleared to take part in 7-on-7 reps during OTAs and reportedly went 5-of-6 with two short touchdown throws during those periods on Monday.
  • Head coach Shane Steichen said the team will keep Jones in 7-on-7 through the end of OTAs and not expose him to full-team 11-on-11 contact until training camp.
  • The staged progression — individual drills, 7-on-7, then planned 11-on-11 at camp — is designed to limit contact and protect Jones’ long-term mobility after his Dec. 7 torn right Achilles.
  • Indianapolis added veteran Easton Stick to the quarterback room and waived Seth Henigan while Anthony Richardson and Riley Leonard continue competing for the backup role.
  • The Colts view this measured ramp-up as consistent with Jones’ timeline toward being available for Week 1, but full contact and clearer game-readiness assessments will wait until training camp and preseason.
