Cologne Zoo Unveils Two Rare Mongozmaki Males to Boost Breeding

The arrivals support a conservation breeding plan focused on forming a compatible pair with the resident female Emena.

Overview

  • The males, Tongay (born 2012) and Aster (born 2005), were transferred from France’s Lumigny Safari Reserve at the end of February.
  • Zoo staff report successful acclimation so far, with monitoring underway to see which male the eight-year-old Emena will accept.
  • The primates are housed in the Madagaskarhaus and are now on public view following the zoo’s announcement on March 12.
  • Mongozmakis are lemur-family primates native to northern Madagascar and established on the Comoros, with documented sexual coloration differences.
  • In human care, the species can live up to about 35 years, and visitors can see the new arrivals daily from 09:00 to 18:00 with tickets available via the zoo website.
