Overview
- Synergy has commissioned the 500MW/2,400MWh Collie Battery Energy Storage System, which is now operational and ranks among Australia’s largest batteries.
- The facility uses CATL’s EnerC LFP units across 640 battery containers and 160 inverters, lifting Synergy’s storage portfolio on the SWIS to more than 3,500MWh.
- Western Australian officials say the battery will support the planned exit from state-owned coal by 2030, deliver grid stability and help lower power prices, with roughly 500 construction jobs created since March 2024.
- Victoria approved two grid-scale projects through its Development Facilitation Program: Atmos Renewables’ 300MW/1,140MWh Heywood BESS and Akaysha Energy’s 400MW/1,600MWh Glenrowan BESS, both set to connect to the NEM.
- Akaysha has submitted the Glenrowan project to the federal EPBC Act process, outlining design measures to limit environmental impact and a planned construction start in late 2027.
