Collared Hoge Veluwe Wolf Confirmed on Utrechtse Heuvelrug

Researchers seek more tracking data to determine its status within the area to inform management.

Overview

  • Tracking data place the radio-collared animal on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with new video showing it in the company of other wolves.
  • It remains unknown whether the wolf has joined the former pack linked to the shot ‘problem wolf’ or established residency in the area.
  • Since collaring in October, the wolf traveled roughly 2,500 kilometers, passed nine pack territories, swam the IJssel twice, and crossed several motorways at night while sheltering by day near walking paths.
  • The project by De Hoge Veluwe and Wageningen University tracks interactions among wolves, people, and prey, with location pings every five minutes when the animal is active.
  • Researchers aim to collar five wolves and ten ungulates but have managed one wolf and four deer so far, citing capture challenges that require approaching within about 25 meters, while some 400 visitors carried movement trackers.
