Coinbase’s Base Launches MCP to Let AI Agents Prepare Onchain Wallet Actions

The feature lets AI assistants draft transactions for users to review and sign, which could make DeFi apps usable through conversational chat and enable small agent-driven payments.

Overview

  • Base launched Base MCP, which went live Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and connects Base Accounts to MCP‑capable AI clients including ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor.
  • The system uses the open Model Context Protocol with OAuth 2.1 and a stored‑request workflow so agents can prepare unsigned transaction requests that users must approve and sign in their Base Account.
  • Base shipped seven launch 'skill plugins' from Uniswap, Morpho, Moonwell, Avantis, Aerodrome, Virtuals, and Bankr to support swaps, lending, liquidity and perpetuals.
  • Base MCP is compatible with Coinbase’s x402 payment standard, allowing agentic micro‑payments in USDC to x402‑enabled services but current agentic payment volumes remain small.
  • Coinbase says the design keeps private keys with users and may reduce some phishing risks, but security depends on safe plugin design and careful user review because agents and plugins can create new attack vectors.
