Coinbase Pushes Agentic Finance as CEO Predicts AI Agents Will Out‑Transact Humans

The company is building x402, Base and USDC infrastructure to let software pay in real time despite open security, concentration and regulatory questions.

Overview

  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said on July 27 that autonomous AI agents could one day complete more daily transactions than all humans combined and framed that outcome as the company’s Agentic Finance strategy.
  • The firm has rolled out specific products to support machine payments, including the x402 payment protocol, Agentic.market, agent wallets and Coinbase for Agents, and it added x402 support for Coinbase Business with developer SDKs in late July.
  • On‑chain analytics firm Chainalysis counted more than 100 million x402‑linked payments on Base and reporters noted a recent 30‑day transaction total of about $24.24 million, a figure that remains tiny compared with card networks.
  • Academic and security preprints tested 15 x402 facilitator services and found rule violations and vulnerabilities across every system examined, citing unpaid service delivery, potential asset exposure or theft and gas‑fee abuse, and affected providers implemented fixes after disclosure.
  • Regulators are taking notice: Bank of England officials said existing rules do not cover autonomous agents, venture capital has shifted heavily toward AI funding, and Coinbase’s upcoming Q2 report on July 30 may offer more detail on revenues and Base activity.
