Coinbase Lets Businesses Accept USDC From Autonomous AI Agents

The company rolled out native x402 payments, developer SDKs, and live agent trading support to make low-cost, automated agent payments and trades practical at scale.

Overview

  • Coinbase rolled out the updates on July 23–24, enabling Coinbase Business accounts to accept payments directly from autonomous AI agents using the x402 protocol without extra merchant setup.
  • x402 repurposes the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" flow so an agent can pay in USDC on Base, attach on-chain proof of payment, and retry a request in one automated step.
  • Coinbase processes agent payments through Coinbase Payments with on-chain USDC settlement on Base, which the company says keeps per-transaction costs below $0.001 and removes chargeback risk.
  • The Coinbase Developer Platform published a CDP x402 SDK that developers can add to APIs, MCP servers, or web services in three lines of code to accept agent payments.
  • The x402 Foundation launched under the Linux Foundation with members including AWS, Cloudflare, Stripe, and Mastercard, but actual transaction volumes, wider market rollout, and regulatory treatment of autonomous-agent payments remain open questions.
