Coinbase Eyes Canada for Everything Exchange With Tokenized Stocks

Full rollout requires Canadian regulatory approval plus a compliant Canadian-dollar stablecoin framework before tokenized equities and payment products can launch

Overview

  • Coinbase Canada CEO Eric Richmond said the company is preparing to bring its Everything Exchange to Canada so users can trade crypto, tokenized stocks, ETFs and prediction markets from one app.
  • The firm says tokenized stocks will be backed one-for-one by real shares and carry dividend rights and shareholder voting rather than acting as synthetic derivatives.
  • Richmond told reporters that Coinbase intends to begin offering tokenized stocks to non-U.S. customers later this month, a timeline the company is reporting but which depends on further approvals.
  • Canadian regulatory clearance and stablecoin rules are the main gates to a full launch because a regulated Canadian-dollar stablecoin is needed for payments and faster cross-border settlement.
  • The push builds on Coinbase’s U.S. rollouts of stocks, ETFs and prediction markets and on recent EU authorization, and it positions the company to compete more directly with brokerages such as Robinhood.
