Cognetti, Bresnahan Advance to Toss-Up Clash for Pennsylvania’s 8th District

Near-equal war chests with ethics questions point to a costly, closely watched fight.

Overview

  • Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti and Rep. Rob Bresnahan advanced unopposed in their primaries, setting up a head-to-head November race in northeastern Pennsylvania.
  • Campaign finance reports show near parity through April, with Bresnahan holding $2.27 million cash on hand and Cognetti at $2.25 million, as Cognetti raised $495,000 in April and $3.1 million since entering last fall.
  • Spending patterns diverged in April, as Bresnahan spent about $255,000 to Cognetti’s roughly $170,000, and year-to-date totals show Bresnahan at about $685,000 versus just over $510,000 for Cognetti.
  • Bresnahan has reported roughly $7.2 million in individual stock trades since taking office, including activity involving Medicaid-linked companies before a major vote; he says advisers handle his trades, and he announced a blind trust and proposed a stock-trading ban in 2025.
  • The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has targeted the seat, the Cook Political Report rates it a toss-up, and the Scranton-based district’s outcome could help decide control of the House.
