Coast Guard Launches Special Missions Command to Unite Elite Maritime Teams

The new functional hub aims to speed deployments by unifying training, doctrine, and gear for specialized missions.

Overview

  • The Coast Guard announced Wednesday it will create a Special Missions Command that brings its deployable specialized forces under one operational leader.
  • The command is slated for commissioning on Oct. 1, 2026 and will be based in Kearneysville, West Virginia.
  • It will consolidate counterterrorism teams, tactical law enforcement units, port security teams, maritime safety and security teams, regional dive lockers, and the National Strike Force.
  • Leaders say the shift from regional control to a single functional command will simplify mobilization across districts, tighten readiness standards, and improve work with military and law enforcement partners.
  • The FY2027 budget request seeks 130 new billets and $20.8 million to stand up the command and align training, doctrine, and equipment for high-risk missions like drug interdictions, port security, and disaster response.
