Overview
- The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety has granted the mandatory certification for CBTC-based operations, completing the statutory safety checks required for the upgraded 19.54-km Sant Ghadge Maharaj Chowk–Chembur corridor.
- MMRDA has formally applied to the Maharashtra government for permission to resume passenger services under the new signalling system and will wait for the state’s decision before restarting trains.
- The modernization programme included installation of Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling, procurement of 10 Made-in-India rakes, and refurbishment of the existing fleet to improve frequency control and safety.
- An independent safety assessment by Bureau Veritas was previously completed and MMRDA has appointed Power Mech Projects to handle train operations, station management and maintenance under a five-year contract.
- Full commuter benefits depend on a separate final clearance for the Chembur Metro Line 2B interchange, which officials say will boost multimodal links for Mumbai’s eastern suburbs once both approvals are in place.
