Cluster of Strong Quakes Rattles Philippines, Indonesia and China

Rescue teams and seismologists are racing to assess damage and monitor aftershocks as local authorities report casualties and displacement.

Overview

  • A string of magnitude-6-plus earthquakes struck the region on June 15–16, with a deep M6.2 off Mindanao, a shallow M6.7 near Palu, Sulawesi, and a shallow M6.3 in Haixi, Qinghai, China, prompting large-scale emergency checks.
  • Indonesia’s disaster agency reported at least one death, dozens injured and hundreds displaced after the shallow M6.7 hit near Palu, where hospitals evacuated patients and buildings showed scattered structural damage.
  • Chinese authorities said the M6.3 in Qinghai caused casualties and triggered field inspections and aftershock monitoring in the sparsely populated high-altitude area.
  • Philippine seismologists said the June 15 M6.2 originated on the Philippine Trench at about 112 km depth and is not linked to the deadly M7.8 that struck Mindanao on June 8, and tsunami warnings for the recent quakes were mostly not issued or were later rescinded.
  • The sequence underscores active faulting along the Pacific Ring of Fire, keeps aftershocks and landslide risk high, and adds to recovery needs where the June 8 M7.8 already raised concerns about coastal uplift, exposed seabed and displaced communities.
