Climate Camp in Hamm Prepares Mass Rally and Urgent Court Fight Over Protest Location

The legal and operational clash tests Germany's plan to procure new gas reserve capacity under a recent supply-security law.

Overview

  • A large Klimacamp has been set up in Lippepark this week and organisers expect at least 1,500 participants with up to about 500 international guests attending workshops, concerts and action trainings.
  • Organisers have filed an urgent application at the Verwaltungsgericht Gelsenkirchen to overturn police orders that would move the 30 May demonstration out of sight and hearing range of the RWE-operated Gersteinwerk.
  • Police from Dortmund have mobilised a multi-day deployment with dozens of vehicles on site and have warned they will act decisively against anyone who trespasses into secured zones or endangers critical infrastructure.
  • Ende Gelände and allied groups are planning mass civil disobedience during the action days, including body blockades and public performances aimed at directly targeting the Gersteinwerk and other planned gas sites.
  • The protests are a direct response to the federal StromVKG draft approved by the cabinet on 13 May that would subsidise new gas reserve capacity, a policy that activists say locks in fossil dependence and benefits firms such as RWE and that still needs parliamentary and EU approvals.
