Cleo Fields Withdraws From House Race to Run for Louisiana State Senate Seat

He said a Supreme Court ruling forced the Legislature to redraw his majority-Black district into a heavily Republican seat, prompting his move back to state politics.

  • Fields announced Tuesday that he will not seek reelection to the U.S. House and will instead run for the unexpired State Senate District 14 seat left open by the July 7 death of Larry Selders.
  • The decision follows the Supreme Court’s April 29 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that found the 2024 6th Congressional District an unconstitutional racial gerrymander and ordered a new map.
  • In late May the Louisiana Legislature enacted SB 121 (Act 2), which dismantled the second majority-Black district created in 2024 and left the state with one majority-Black seat.
  • Republicans moved quickly to target the reconfigured LA-06: the NRCC added it to its list of pickups and Inside Elections estimates the new district would have favored President Trump by about 32 points in 2024.
  • Louisiana also rescheduled House races to a November jungle primary with Dec. 12 runoffs, a change that alters campaign timing and may reduce opportunities for Black voters to elect preferred candidates.
