Clear The Shelters 2026 Kicks Off Nationwide Pet Adoption Drive

The monthlong campaign uses fee waivers, virtual listings, transfers, corporate partnerships to increase adoptions and ease pressure on crowded shelters.

Overview

  • The campaign began Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 31 with Hill’s Pet Nutrition serving as the 2026 presenting sponsor for the first time.
  • Many participating shelters are offering reduced or waived adoption fees, and NBC San Diego and Telemundo 20 will waive all adoption fees countywide at San Diego Humane Society campuses during an Aug. 29 event.
  • WeRescue is again hosting virtual adoptions that let users search listings and ask shelters questions directly, and donations to the general Clear The Shelters fund remain open through Sept. 15.
  • Shelters are coordinating transfers to relieve strained facilities, with MSPCA-Angell set to take about 80 cats from Texas as part of disaster-relief support.
  • Since 2015 the initiative reports roughly 1.3 million adoptions and more than $5.6 million raised overall, with more than 160,000 pets adopted and about $628,000 raised during the 2025 campaign.
