Civilization VII’s Free ‘Test of Time’ Update Restores Single-Civ Play on May 19

The overhaul answers a year of player backlash over forced civ‑swapping.

Overview

  • 2K and Firaxis announced the Test of Time update for Civilization VII, arriving May 19 as a free download that lets players stick with one civilization for an entire campaign.
  • New mechanics include Syncretism, which lets you borrow units or infrastructure from a civ in its peak age, plus Affirmation, which reinforces your chosen civ’s unique strengths.
  • Victories are reworked to track dominance across Military, Economy, Culture, or Science from early ages, and Legacy Paths are replaced by Triumphs that set optional, playstyle-specific goals.
  • The patch also adds a Fractal Continent map, a Commerce screen, an Advisor Council, updated map generation, new narrative events, fresh audio, broad balance changes, and a free new leader on PC and consoles including Switch.
  • Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said “we got it wrong” on Civ VII’s design and called the game profitable, as coverage notes player engagement trails Civ V and VI and user scores remain mixed on Steam and Metacritic.
