Civilization VII Sets May 19 ‘Test of Time’ Update With Single-Civ Option and Victory Overhaul

The overhaul aims to win back players frustrated by forced civilization swaps.

Overview

  • 2K and Firaxis announced Wednesday that the free ‘Test of Time’ update for Civilization VII will launch on May 19.
  • Time-Tested Civs restores the choice to play one civilization for an entire campaign, with Syncretism and Affirmation letting players mix in units or double down on their civ’s strengths.
  • Core progression is being reworked as Victories now track dominance across Military, Economy, Culture, or Science from early ages, and Legacy Paths are replaced by Triumphs with optional goals tied to six attributes.
  • The update also adds a Fractal Continent map, a new Commerce screen, an Advisor Council, refreshed map generation, new narrative events, audio and balance tweaks, and a free new leader for all owners.
  • Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said “we got it wrong” with Civ VII’s design and took responsibility, noting engagement trails Civ V and VI even as the game remains profitable.
