- Construction crews broke ground on the long-delayed Tremont Avenue busway on Aug. 12, restarting a project paused by the prior administration.
- The redesign creates an eastbound busway from Third Avenue to Southern Boulevard, a westbound busway from Southern Boulevard to Belmont Avenue, and a short eastbound shared bus-and-bike lane between Webster Avenue and Third Avenue.
- Starting Sept. 19 the corridor will bar most private vehicles between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., with through access reserved for buses, six-wheel-plus trucks, Access-A-Ride vans, emergency vehicles and bicycles.
- Enforcement will rely on stationary cameras, bus-mounted cameras and NYPD ticketing, and city officials say modeled estimates show up to 60% faster bus speeds, as much as six minutes saved per trip, and up to a 45% drop in pedestrian and cyclist injuries.
- Local drivers and small-business owners have urged caution about access and economic impacts, and city officials say independent data and post-implementation monitoring will be used to verify the projected speed and safety gains as part of the broader Next Stop bus improvement program.
