Citi Expands Merchant Services to Accept Stablecoins Through Coinbase

The arrangement could accelerate corporate use of stablecoins by linking Coinbase custody and blockchain rails to Citi’s dollar settlement system.

Overview

  • The reported partnership, which surfaced Monday, is moving from pilot work into a merchant-processing offering that would let Citi’s institutional clients accept stablecoin payments at checkout.
  • Under the plan Coinbase will provide blockchain payment rails, custody and automatic conversion of stablecoins into fiat while Citi will settle proceeds and act as the bank of record.
  • Citi clients accepting stablecoins would keep tokens custodied at Coinbase where they can earn an interest-like reward currently reported at 3.75% per year and receive automatic fiat conversion.
  • Markets reacted quickly with some analysts raising Coinbase price targets and the stock moving, even as coverage noted Coinbase’s weak Q2 results and recent insider stock sales.
  • The deal follows Citi’s broader tokenization push, including new live markets in Japan and the UAE, and leaves implementation timing, merchant rollout and wider industry uptake as the key items to watch next.
