Cinema Guild Buys North American Rights to Hong Sangsoo’s New Film

Brokered with South Korea’s Finecut, the deal reflects specialty distributors securing auteur projects before festival debuts.

Overview

  • Cinema Guild has acquired North American distribution rights to Hong Sangsoo’s 35th feature, Nowhere to Lay My Eyes, in a deal negotiated by Cinema Guild president Peter Kelly and Finecut’s Youngjoo Suh.
  • The film follows Sanghee as she returns to her mother on Jeju Island and spends two days with family where a documentarian stepfather and small revelations shape the story, according to the official synopsis.
  • Nowhere to Lay My Eyes reunites Hong with regular collaborators Kim Minhee, Kwon Haehyo, Shin Seokho, and Park Miso and marks the first time actor Choi Myeonggil appears in one of his films.
  • The acquisition was completed before the film’s world premiere in the international competition of the 79th Locarno Film Festival, which runs August 5–15, 2026.
  • The deal builds on Cinema Guild’s recent history of releasing Hong’s work and other Locarno titles and should smooth the film’s path into North American arthouse venues and festivals after its premiere.
