Ciara Mageean Continues Chemotherapy and Says She Will ‘Fit as Much Living’ into Her Time

Her active treatment and forthcoming memoir mark a move from elite competition to public campaigning and personal priorities.

Overview

  • Mageean revealed she was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer last year that has spread to her liver and a small amount to her lungs and that surgery and radiotherapy are not currently viable options.
  • She has completed 18 rounds of chemotherapy and reports neuropathy and other lasting side effects in her hands and toes that affect daily life.
  • An oncologist gave a rough prognosis of about two to three years when Mageean asked about timelines during treatment.
  • Since that December hospital appointment she has chosen to prioritise experiences, appeared on RTÉ’s Uncharted after 12 rounds of chemo, is promoting a memoir called My Greatest Race due on 18 June, and is planning to marry her partner in September.
  • Mageean has publicly thanked supporters, said she found both grim survival statistics and hopeful long‑term survivor stories online, and is using her platform to raise awareness about listening to the body and valuing everyday joys.
