Overview
- The library, which opened on Friday, June 5, sits in Churchgate’s south concourse and was inaugurated by former cricketer AB de Villiers, who donated autographed copies of his biography.
- Library Junction is staffed by a librarian from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, holds about 1,200 donated books across genres, and allows commuters to borrow titles for two weeks.
- Project Mumbai led the initiative with support from Western Railway’s Mumbai Central Division and L&T Ltd., while citizens, schools and volunteers supplied and catalogued the collection.
- The structure was made using recycled plastic collected through Project Mumbai’s Plastic Recyclathon to connect the reading drive with World Environment Day and sustainability goals.
- Organisers say the facility aims to improve passenger experience and civic engagement, and Project Mumbai plans to create similar reading spaces at other stations across the city.
