Chrystia Freeland to Publish Memoir 'Unreliable Boyfriend'

Her memoir offers a firsthand account of U.S.-Canada relations ahead of next month's CUSMA review.

Overview

  • Simon & Schuster announced on Wednesday that Unreliable Boyfriend will be published on Oct. 13, 2026.
  • Freeland said the book is about power, democracy and the choices countries make when old rules no longer apply.
  • The title references a remark she made on Real Time With Bill Maher that the United States was “not a very reliable boyfriend” at the time.
  • Since leaving Parliament in January, Freeland has taken Ukraine-related roles and will become Warden of Rhodes House and CEO of the Rhodes Trust in July.
  • Freeland spent a decade in senior Canadian cabinet posts and led negotiations for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a pact that is up for its scheduled review next month.
