Christopher Bell Crashes From Texas Lead After Gilliland Clips Him

The setback underscores a season of strong pace repeatedly undone by incidents.

Overview

  • Bell, running out front at Texas Motor Speedway, was sent into the Turn 4 wall Sunday after lapped driver Todd Gilliland lost control and clipped his right rear.
  • The contact came on Lap 68 and, after a short attempt to fix the car under NASCAR’s Damaged Vehicle Policy repair clock, Joe Gibbs Racing retired the No. 20 Toyota.
  • Gilliland apologized over the radio and said turbulent air made his car loose before the spin that caught the leader.
  • After being released from the infield care center, Bell told FS1 he was thankful for fast cars and laps led, while calling the result a bummer he expects will turn around.
  • The crash extended Bell’s run to four straight finishes outside the top 15, even as he has led 22 or more laps in each of the last three races, including 47 at Kansas and 31 at Talladega.
