China’s May Day Box Office Hits 758 Million Yuan as Ticket Prices Fall to Four-Year Low

Deep ticket discounts plus local subsidies drew more viewers by cutting prices.

Overview

  • China’s National Film Administration set the 2026 May Day holiday total at 758 million yuan with 20.84 million admissions and 2.376 million screenings.
  • The average ticket cost 36.3 yuan, down 8% from 2025 and the lowest level in about four years, according to CCTV’s report of the official data.
  • The five top earners were “消失的人”, “寒战 1994”, “穿普拉达的女王 2”, “10 间敢死队”, and “给阿嬷的情书”.
  • CCTV said stronger platform discounts and local coupon programs lowered prices and boosted turnout, with more than 350 million yuan in viewing subsidies redeemed that helped spur about 2.96 billion yuan in ticket sales.
  • Real-time trackers Maoyan and Dengta had foreshadowed the finish by showing admissions above 18.91 million and box office beyond 748 million yuan before the official tally, with IT之家 noting year-to-date sales have surpassed 13.6 billion yuan.
