China’s JUNO Neutrino Observatory Marks Completion With Early Measurement Progress

The underground facility begins a three-decade program after launching full data collection in August.

Overview

  • The Jiangmen Neutrino Experiment Facility held a completion ceremony on November 19 in Guangdong province.
  • Operators disclosed that JUNO has already narrowed key observables needed to measure neutrino mass, an early result announced at the event.
  • Parts of the detector, located about 700 meters underground, were shown to reporters on November 18 via a trolley-access tunnel.
  • The collaboration includes roughly 700 scientists from 17 countries and positions the project alongside Japan’s Super-Kamiokande and the under-construction Hyper-Kamiokande.
  • Project leaders said they aim to conduct world-leading research, with operations planned for about 30 years following the August 2025 start of full-scale data taking.
