China's Chang'e-7 Set to Launch to Moon's South Pole on Aug. 23–24

Its goal is to search for buried water ice in permanently shadowed craters to test technology for future crewed landings.

  • The mission is a coordinated multi‑craft stack — an orbiter, lander, rover and a propellant‑powered hopper — that will use the Queqiao‑2 relay satellite for communications between Earth and the lunar surface.
  • Chang'e‑7's primary science goal is in‑situ volatile work: the hopper will fly into permanently shadowed craters, a drill will collect shallow subsurface samples to about one metre, tiny samples under 1 gram will be sealed and heated above 200°C, and released gases will be measured by laser and mass spectrometers to quantify water and hydrogen‑isotope ratios.
