China Sentences Former SASTIND Deputy Zhang Jianhua to 10 Years for Bribery

State media framed the verdict as part of a wider defence-sector anti-graft push focused on disciplining officials, recovering alleged illicit assets.

Overview

  • The Dazhou Intermediate People’s Court handed Zhang a 10-year prison term on Aug. 5 after finding he accepted bribes and used his positions to arrange administrative approvals and equity investments for others.
  • Court reports say Zhang took money and valuables across 2008–2025, with official accounts citing either about 55 million yuan in total or a split of roughly 43.38 million yuan in cash and valuables plus 11.7 million yuan taken after retirement.
  • Zhang served as deputy director and held senior finance and engineering roles at the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, and the court said he continued to leverage his influence after leaving office.
  • State media said Zhang admitted guilt, expressed remorse, cooperated with investigators, returned illicit gains and had his illegal proceeds ordered confiscated and turned over to the state treasury.
  • The verdict follows recent high-profile defence-sector prosecutions and a July Politburo session where Xi Jinping urged deeper anti-corruption work in the military, a pattern that raises prospects of further legal and party discipline in defence procurement and oversight.
