China Says It Tracked Dutch Frigate Through Taiwan Strait

Beijing’s public tracking and claim that a De Ruyter helicopter entered Paracel airspace signal resolve and raise the risk of miscalculation in the South China Sea

Overview

  • The PLA’s Eastern Theater Command said Friday it dispatched naval and air assets to track the Dutch frigate HNLMS De Ruyter during its transit of the Taiwan Strait and that forces “handled the situation effectively.”
  • China’s statement also said the shipborne helicopter of the De Ruyter had earlier illegally entered the airspace over the Paracel Islands, and the PLA published two photos showing the ship and the helicopter.
  • The Netherlands has maintained the De Ruyter was operating under international law for diplomatic, security and economic reasons and has not offered detailed operational comment on the incident.
  • Beijing framed the actions as protection of sovereignty and said its forces will remain on high alert, while analysts warn the PLA’s prior use of electronic interference near reclaimed features raises the chance of miscalculation.
  • The episode highlights growing friction over freedom of navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea and could affect regional naval patrols, diplomatic ties and plans for nearby exercises.
