China Opens Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the World’s Highest

Officials say the minutes-long canyon crossing will bolster Guizhou’s connectivity.

Overview

  • The suspension bridge opened to traffic on Sept. 28 after more than three years of construction, with a deck-to-river clearance of about 625 meters and an overall length of roughly 2,890 meters.
  • Its 1,420-meter main span is reported as the largest for a bridge built in mountainous terrain, according to provincial and state media.
  • Authorities say the crossing time over the Huajiang Grand Canyon has been cut from about two hours to around two minutes as part of the S57 expressway link.
  • Engineers completed final safety checks in August with a 96‑truck static and dynamic load test monitored by hundreds of sensors.
  • The bridge surpasses the nearby Beipanjiang/Duge Bridge (about 565 meters) as the world’s highest and features tourist amenities including a high‑speed glass elevator, viewing platforms, a glass walkway and bungee facilities.
