- Video released by the Beijing Institute of Technology on Friday showed three eight-wheeled trucks with containerized modules mechanically linked to form an electromagnetic aircraft launch system that launched a fixed-wing propeller drone.
- The system uses EMALS, an electromagnetic catapult that accelerates aircraft without rockets or steam, and the container modules are sized to move by road, rail or ship and to be joined into a continuous launch track.
- Chinese analysts say the concept would let forces disperse launch sites into complex terrain and onto civilian vessels, and that similar container modules could house missiles, radars, electronic-warfare gear or command centers.
- Major technical and operational questions remain open, including how to provide the high electrical power for repeated launches, how fast crews can assemble and move the modules, how the system links into command-and-control, and how vulnerable it would be to strikes or electronic attack.
- The demo builds on China’s naval use of EMALS, including on the Type 076, and developers say universities, state-owned firms and private companies have collaborated on modular container projects so observers will watch for testing, production plans and integration into PLA forces.
