Chilkur Balaji Priests Lead Varuna Japam at Osman Sagar to Pray for Monsoon Rains

Temple leaders say the mass Vedic rite aims to protect crops and refill drying reservoirs across Telangana.

Overview

  • Temple managers announced the special Varuna Japam and then carried out the ritual at Osman Sagar (Gandipet Lake), with reports saying the ceremonies took place on Tuesday.
  • Vedic pandits and ritwiks stood waist-deep at the reservoir, performed a Kalash procession and chanted Varuna Japam 108 times following passages from the Taittiriya Samhita.
  • Named priests reported to lead the prayers included C S Lakshmi Narasimhan, Dr V Srirama Ghanapati and chief priest Rangarajan, who guided the ritual program at the temple and lakefront.
  • A large number of devotees joined and watched the ceremonies, which temple officials framed as a community effort to bring timely rains and protect farmers.
  • Local coverage notes the ritual’s social and symbolic importance but does not provide meteorological evidence that the prayers produce or have produced rainfall.
